The Latest Trend in Nose Reshaping

Do you have one of those facial flaws that annoys you when you look in the mirror? If so, you’re not alone. A recent article featured in the Plastic Surgery News covers an emerging trend in nose reshaping (rhinoplasty); most people who have their nose reshaped are not going for a “classic” look or a “celebrity” look. They’re simply people who feel that their nose doesn’t”fit” their face. In fact, may people elect to improve a facial “flaw” that, often times, other people don’t really notice. But, they see it, and it bothers them.

Many surgeries correct slight issues; misalignments, curvatures, asymmetry, etc. Often times people have just have a particular area modified, like the bridge or the tip of the nose. And, the result enables them to look in the mirror every day without seeing that nagging “flaw.”

Often, when we think of someone getting cosmetic surgery we envision a drastic change; perhaps something that makes them look like a different person. However, that’s simply not the case. Small corrections can improve a person’s confidence while changing their appearance only enough for friends to say “You look different…did you do something with your hair?”

If you have a nose or other facial imperfection, realize that cosmetic surgery is often the perfect solution for those small things that “bug you.” For a consultation with Dr. Aguiar, contact us today.

Plastic Surgery – Not Just for Cosmetic Reasons

Plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery seem to be fairly synonymous; when most people think of plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery comes to mind. Typically it’s believed that patients undergo plastic surgery to make themselves look better. But plastic surgery also has a number of health and wellness benefits.

Donna McLean, a 46-year-old mother of three, turned to an eye-lift procedure when her naturally hooded eyelids drooped with age and began to interfere with her vision. After the procedure her vision improved and she experienced the added benefit of looking younger.

Studies have shown that cosmetic surgery improves self-image and often leads to an increase in happiness and a decrease in depression. The benefits of cosmetic surgery include improved physical appearance and psychological well-being.

Additionally there are a number of physical health benefits associated with cosmetic procedures, including breast reduction to help ease back and neck pain, a tummy tuck to improve posture and decrease back pain, and breast reconstruction for cancer survivors.

The reality is that people undergo cosmetic procedures for more than “vanity.” Self-esteem, which is linked to body image, is important to our overall health and well-being. If you’re experiencing physical challenges that you think could be addressed through plastic surgery, contact Dr. Aguiar today for a consultation.

Ear Lobe Repair

Believe it or not, earlobes are a subject for consultations in our office frequently.  The type of clients vary from all walks of life and all types of earlobe issues.  Here’s a quick list of the types of earlobe issues Dr. Aguiar has treated.

  1. Tears- This type of injury to the earlobe often happens whe the ears are pierced and an earring gets pulled on accidently in a sporting activity, by clothing, or young children.  Babies and toddlers love to grab mom’s earrings!
  2. Stretching-Combine heavy earrings and gravity for many years and your earlobes can become long and stretched.  Dr. Aguiar is a pro at making your earlobes look young and perky again.  :-)
  3. Trauma-It’s amzaing to me how often ears and earlobes are injured.  At our office, we have seen inuries that result from dog bites, knife injuries, gun shots, and falls.
  4. Fashion Trends-Frequently we see young people who have decided to follow the fashion trend of purposely stretching out their earlobes by wearing plugs or discs to modify their appearance.

If you have an earlobe dilemma, don’t hesitate to call…….we have seen it all!

Couples Cosmetic Surgery

An interesting trend in cosmetic surgery is couples having surgery done together. It used to be that wives or husband would come in and say they didn’t want their significant other to know they were having “work” done. But recently there’s been an uptick in husbands/wives, boyfriends/girlfriends going through the process together.

It makes sense that you might want to “grow younger” with your life partner. Dr Nancy Synderman, medical editor for NBC, thinks this trend may be part of what is driving the increase in men opting for cosmetic surgery and non-surgical procedures.

Popular couple procedures include face lift, Botox, liposuction and dermal fillers. Who knows, maybe we’ll begin to seem more tummy tucks, eyebrow lifts and liposuction.

What You Should Know Before You Have Plastic Surgery

Beware of the “White Coat Syndrome”.   You may have read my blog post, “Be Smart About Liposuction” and if you didn’t you should.  In that article, I stated “just because a doctor has an “MD”, labcoat, liposuction machine, and billboard does not make them qualified, much less an expert in Liposuction.”  Well guess what, it’s not just Liposuction that is being done by unqualified physicians.  Not every doctor that advertises plastic surgery is a plastic surgeon.

There is a trend that you should know about if you, a friend, or a family member is considering plastic surgery and it’s happening here in Tampa. It’s becoming common to find physicians, board certified in other specialties, performing plastic surgery procedures. Even doctors with no surgical training are marketing and performing plastic surgery procedures in their offices.

Too often, patients come into our office and tell us about the consultations they have had with other “plastic surgeons.”  Many times the doctor they thought was a plastic surgeon isn’t really a plastic surgeon.  Their first question is always, “Isn’t there some kind of a law in Florida that prevents doctors from performing surgeries they are not trained to perform?”  The answer is unfortunately NO.

It is not against the law for a doctor with 4 years of medical school, and no surgical training, to set up an office and perform plastic surgery. And it is not against the law for a physician certified in another specialty such as family practice, dermatology, gynecology,or general surgery to begin performing plastic surgery. With the demand for plastic surgery increasing and insurance payments to physicians decreasing, it is likely we will see more, not less of this.

So it’s not against the law, but in my opinion it is unethical.  It’s no longer good enough to see the words “board certified” and assume your doctor has the right credentials. Most doctors are board certified in some medical or surgical specialty.  You should look for a doctor that is board certified in plastic surgery.

So how do you know if your doctor has the proper credentials to perform your plastic surgery?

There are safety seals on almost every product we purchase.  Our medication, bottled drinks, even beauty care products, but there is no safety seal on a doctor.  The safety seal for a plastic surgeon is the symbol below.

Member American Society of Plastic Surgeons

The only Board that certifies plastic surgeons is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Don’t be confused by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery or other boards mentioning plastic or cosmetic surgery. Be aware that these are self-appointed boards (meaning any self-serving group of doctors could start one.) The American Board of Medical Specialties does not recognize them and their members are not Board-certified plastic surgeons.

The key to having a safe plastic surgery is to educate yourself and ask a lot of questions.  The World Wide Web can be a great tool if you know what to look for.  I know if I wasn’t in this business, I would have trouble navigating thru the advertisements and “fake” board certificates.

As always, Dr. Aguiar, myself, and team are here to help you have a pleasant and wonderful experience.  Your safety and satisfaction is our top priority.  We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and your family & friends.

“Uniboob” is extremely rare.

Today on Good Morning America, there was a story about a woman that had her breast implants removed and replaced with new implants.  After the second surgery, she had a symmastia, otherwise known as “uniboob”.

Symmastia after breast augmentation is an undesirable result which occurs when implants come to close to the midline of the chest.  This results in a lifting of the skin from the chest wall and creates the dreaded “uniboob” appearance. This usually happens as a result of the overly-aggressive release of the chest muscle during breast augmentation surgery, extending the release to the mid-chest or can be from a patient’s muscles and tissue being too weak to support the implant.

Correction of this condition via breast revision surgery usually involves removing the implants and closing the space in the middle of the chest with internal sutures.

It is impossible to tell from the story on GMA if the symmastia resulted from a surgeon’s error or her own body’s tissue being weak, but the good news is that the symmastia was corrected by another surgeon and she has normal looking breasts now.

As the reporter recommended, it is important to research your surgeon prior to deciding to have surgery.  I always recommend utilizing the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as a resource for finding a qualified surgeon.

Dr. Joseph W. Aguiar is an excellent surgeon who has performed hundreds of breast augmentations and has never had a patient with a Uniboob.  :-)

American Society of Plastic Surgeons Launches Educational Campaign

In response to recent reports of issues and even deaths resulting from plastic surgery, The American Society of Plastic Surgeon has launched a patient safety campaign to inform the public of the dangers of having cosmetic procedures performed by unqualified or under-qualified doctors.

What is a Plastic Surgeon?

Of particular concern to the organization is an issue they are calling “white coat deception,” which stems from the fact that just because a doctor has a medical license it does not mean he or she is trained and qualified to perform plastic surgery. Only four states (California, Florida, Louisiana and Texas) have laws requiring full disclosure of the specifics of a physician’s medical training and background. In states without this requirement any doctor—for instance a pediatrician or OB/GYN—can claim to be a qualified plastic surgeon.

In other states doctors can undergo a few hours or days of training in a procedure, then begin performing the procedure. However, this lack of training and experience leaves them unprepared to deal with complications that experienced plastic surgeons are well aware of and fully qualified to deal with. There have been a number of stories recently in the press about deaths associated with liposuction—a common and safe procedure when performed correctly—when the doctor performing the procedure was not experienced and couldn’t handle complications that arose. Other stories abound of disfigurement, and in many cases the ability to subsequently repair the damage is compromised by mistakes made during surgery.

What is “Board Certification?”

In order to become a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a doctor must have a minimum of six years of surgical training in plastic surgery. They also must complete oral and written examinations, and continue to pursue 50 hours a year of continuing education with an important emphasis on patient safety. Additionally, ASPS members do not operate in a facility unless it is accredited, insuring the optimum in patient safety for the rare occasion when there is a problem. And finally, ASPS members adhere to a strict code of ethics.

So don’t trust your procedure to just any cosmetic surgeon. Make sure you do your homework and insure that your plastic surgeon is board-certified.

Aguiar Plastic Surgery Appreciates It’s Clients

Too often in this busy, busy world we forget to take time and thank those that we appreciate.  A simple “Thank You” is often forgotten.

Dr. Aguiar, myself, and staff decided to stop, take a moment and let our clients know how much we appreciate them.  On September 20, 2011, Aguiar Plastic Surgery hosted a Customer Appreciation Event at Napa Flair in Westchase.  Vertical Tampa Bay and it’s editor Leslie Joy Ickowitz co-hosted the event also.

Aguiar Plastic Surgery was also honored to have the event covered by two of Tampa Bay’s leading Bloggers.  First, Tracy Guida, creator of My Other City By the Bay and second by, Kristin with Bon Bon Rose Girls.  Both Tracy & Kristin are fabulous writers who always have something great to say!  Please check out what they had to say about our event.

My Other City by the Bay

Bon Bon Rose Girls

Now that I have expressed appreciation to Tracy & Kristen, Luann & Leslie, let me know express my appreciation to our clients!  This event was really all about our clients.  We just really wanted to do something nice for our clients that have stuck with us through the ups and downs of the economy.  Aguiar Plastic Surgery & Essentials Med Spa has been in business for  5 1/2 years and 2 1/2 of those years have been during the recession.

Aguiar Plastic Surgery is incredibly grateful to have clients that will refer their friends and family to us.  A referral of someone you care about is the best compliment we can receive!  At this first event, we invited our “Biggest Fans”.  Every person invited has referred other clients to our business.  THANK YOU!

On September 20th we greeted our clients with a gift and some incredible wines provided by Napa Flair.  Luann Shapiro is the owner of Napa Flair and has worked in Napa Valley.  Her incredible knowledge of the wine industry, gourmet foods, and home decor is evident at Napa Flair.

Our clients really appreciated being “appreciated”.  Everyone loved the experience.  If you weren’t invited to this Appreciation Event, please know we will be hosting more in the future.

Dr. Aguiar, myself and staff APPRECIATE all of you and will see you at another Appreciation Event in the very near future!
