Active FL Seniors seek cosmetic surgery

Florida Seniors and Cosmetic Surgery- Looking as good you feel!
Tampa, Florida has a large senior population true, but are they a true reflective picture of all seniors the across the country? According the Sun Sentinel, Florida seniors are some of the most vibrant and active anywhere.  And when it comes to cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery, age seems to have no limits!

Disappearing are the days of 40 being over the hill (thankfully). In fact more people would answer that they look older, long before they feel older. If 70 is the new 50, then there is nothing stopping today’s active seniors from looking as young as people twenty and even thirty years their junior look. This new youthful attitude and active lifestyle includes cosmetic procedures. On average most 70 or 80-year-old across the country are in a nursing home or are homebound. Here in Florida, they’re golfing, walking, jogging, dancing playing tennis and yes, even getting plastic surgery! In fact Florida plastic surgeons are doing facelifts on seniors in their 80’s, which is not as common around the country.

National statistics show that seniors 65 and older accounted for just 8 percent of the 10 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic surgeries performed in 2012 across the country, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  In Florida, surgeons say patients 70 and older make up 10 to 20 percent of their practices that are seeking cosmetic procedures, whether it’s Botox, fillers, eyelid procedures, neck lifts and even full facelifts.

In a New York Times article, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in 2010 there were 84,685 surgical procedures among patients age 65 and older. They included 26,635 face-lifts; 24,783 cosmetic eyelid operations; 6,469 liposuctions; 5,874 breast reductions; 3,875 forehead lifts; 3,339 breast lifts and 2,414 breast augmentations.

So why are the Florida seniors jumping on the cosmetic bandwagon? Well, as safer, much less invasive techniques continue to evolve, combined with people living healthier and longer, there is a diminishing maximum age for cosmetic procedures. And why shouldn’t there be? Many seniors living in Florida are single, and still looking to date and enjoy all the year-round activities Florida has to offer.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2014, there is a need to better understand cosmetic procedures unique to this age population due to the increase in the growing interest. They say that patients over 65 years old can safely undergo cosmetic procedures with a complications rate similar to younger patients when surgery is performed by board certified plastic surgeon. Armed with quick and safe cosmetic solutions and a more active lifestyle, it is likely for even more seniors to seek cosmetic enhancements into 2015, and beyond.
