A recent article brought to light a persistent issue in the field of healthcare. According to a study conducted in California with 48 affluent patients for Health Affairs, it appears most patients are not comfortable taking as active a role in their treatment as they would like. Reasons given were fear of taking up too much of the doctor’s time and fear of going against a doctor’s recommendation. Additionally, many patients said they felt their doctor did not listen to or respect what they had to say.
This hesitancy by patients to ask questions means they are not as actively involved as they should be in their own healthcare and treatment, and many patients reported doing research on their own to better understand their options.
